A flag for Davyd Chychkan
The artwork is a flag on the flagpole of Balmoral Castle. It consists of colored fabrics and was designed based on a drawing by the artist Sasha Kurmaz, who participated in the "Artist at Risk" residency program in 2025.
The work is titled The Flag of Davyd and is dedicated to the Ukrainian artist, activist and anarchist Davyd Chychkan, who was killed on the front lines in the summer of 2025 during the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine.
A tribute to the memory of an artist who dedicated his life to the ideas of anarcho-syndicalism and the anti-authoritarian movement – and ultimately died fighting for liberation against Russian colonial expansion in Ukraine.

Sasha Kurmaz is an interdisciplinary artist. In his artistic practice, he uses photography, video, artist's books, various forms of collaborative and participatory practices, performative interaction, and interventions in public space.
His work is closely linked to the study of the social landscape and the challenges facing Ukrainian society in recent years. He critically examines topics such as trauma, collective and personal memory, the impact of war and its consequences for society, and the dynamics of the relationship between individuals and power structures.
